Cryptography tug-of-war

(soothing music) - There is likely to be a continuing back and forth between security and privacy, which is to be dominant, and when is one going to be sacrificed for the other. This debate around cryptographic back doors and the use of cryptography is not going to go away anytime soon. As technology continues to evolve, so will the methods for exploiting it. Currently, some of the parties in this debate, on one side, we have government intelligence agencies and law enforcement who are interested in enforcing laws and protecting national security. On the other hand, we have private citizens and others who are concerned with privacy, human rights, and tech companies who are interested in preserving their markets. Having back doors in place can shrink those markets, threaten privacy, not only from government agencies in the US and elsewhere, but also by individuals who compromise those systems or who step outside of their authorizations to use any kinds of back doors or special keys…
