Establishing a sense of flow with continuation
- [Instructor] Next, we'll take a closer look at a principle you can use in your layouts to establish a sense of flow. Continuity is the second of the six principles of Gestalt theory we're exploring here, which some folks also refer to as continuation. Continuity refers to the idea that our beautiful brains have the tendency to see a set of sequenced lines or points as related when they follow a continuous-seeming path, even when they may be partially hidden from view. Let's unpack that. Our eyes enjoy following lines, curves, and paths, and to make sense of sequenced things, our mind will try to make connections as part of understanding. So let's use continuation intentionally in our designs to establish a sense of flow from one area to the next. Continuity in design happens when a series of repeating shapes, which could be as simple as dots or dashes or fish, are arranged in an orderly fashion.
