Exercise: Create a value stream

- Let's dig into making a basic value stream map. Your first step is choosing a process that you're familiar with, that you can document the steps of, and can measure the time each piece takes, or at least make an educated guess. You can use any process that you do over and over. It could be the software delivery process at your workplace, or it could be the process of how you paint a batch of tabletop miniatures at home as a hobby. For purposes of this exercise, have it be a fairly simple process, without a lot of branching, external dependencies and so on. But you should consider the entire process, from the very start to the very end. We're talking about everything, from when you first get the idea, to when it's finally finished and in someone's hands. Next, pick a tool to draw it in. Most diagramming tools like Visio and Miro have value stream shapes in them. Use one you're familiar with, or you can use the free online drawing service, draw.io.
