Solution: Create a value stream
- Welcome back. Let's take a look at your value stream and talk about how to use it. Let's calculate the time and the waste involved in my simple miniature painting value stream. The overall cycle time of a value stream is how long it takes one unit of work to go from start to finish. Let's take a look at my timeline. When I sum up the value added steps on the bottom of our value stream timeline, I get an hour and 10 minutes. When I sum up the non-value added steps, I get 2 hours and 15 minutes, and when I add those two up, I learn that it takes me 3 hours and 25 minutes of end-to-end cycle time to create one painted miniature. That's as fast as I can make it happen. And only a third of that time is me performing value added steps like painting. The rest is waste, but it's a good example of Type 1 Muda waste, and that it's necessary, the paint has to dry before I can add another coat. How about your example? Is most of the time spent in your process value add or waste? Let's look at…
