How to leverage characters for learning

- Games have characters. Think of a link from The Legend of Zelda series. Or Mario and his brother Luigi. Many games employ the use of characters to both involve the player and to add a relatable and human element to the experience. With content gamification, adding characters to the learning experience can be helpful from both an engagement and a learning perspective. Research involving the use of characters in learning reveals interesting results. For example, in one study, it was found that on screen characters are better instructors than text based instruction. In this study, involving different word problems, one group of learners were given on screen instructions by character while the other group was given text based instructions with no character. The group that received instructions from the on screen character, generated 30% more correct solutions on a test than the group with simply the text on the screen.
