- One of the best places to ask good questions is to check for missing information. A little bit of missing information can significantly change the story. Sometimes the data is incomplete. Other times the person intentionally leaves out the data because it tells a different story. You'll see this a lot with advertising. You might have heard the popular claim that "Four out of five dentists recommend sugarless gum." That seems like a pretty strong show of support. It sounds like 80% of dentists say you should choose sugarless gum. Yet there's a bit of information that's missing. A well-placed question can change the whole story. What do dentists generally tell their patients about chewing gum. Maybe a hundred percent of dentists tell their patients to never chew gum. But say that there are 10% of patients that insist on chewing gum. The dentist in this case might recommend chewing sugarless. As you can see, that's entirely different story. No advertiser is going to say, "All dentists…
